Was unsure what to run today but Mum was doing 5 miles with intervals so I joined her. Her interval speed is less than mine so even though I did intervals yesterday it wasn’t too intensive. Was glad of the distance though – I think in future I am going to have to start increasing the length of my medium runs.

Thursday 18th May – 8x1min intervals
Needed to get my intervals in this week and used this morning for that. Was a pretty good session, focus was there all the way round. Weather was very warm (about 15 degrees) and I really felt that, as well as the annoying presence of many flies. Embedded in a 3 mile run.
Wednesday 17th May – 8 miles (Long run) – 1:15:08
Finally managed to get around to squeezing in a long run. Was mentally intimidated at the thought but felt ok as soon as I set off. The first half was on road to Aberford and the second half was back along very pleasant country paths. Wasn’t pushing too hard and ended up with a 9’23” pace, but that’s fine. Felt good overall and very happy when complete.
Tuesday 16th May – 2 miles, fast
I have been wanting to ramp up my speed on my shorter run and fully committed to that today. Concentrated for the full route and saw a marked increase in pace. The route took 15:17 mins instead of the 16 + minutes that it has been taking.
Monday 15th May – 3 miles
Intended to long run today but due to laziness got up late. Ran 3 miles at an average pace of 8:42 min/mile. Not great but at least I went!
Sunday 14th May – 4 miles
I was going to rest on Sunday but was encouraged by friends to head out. We went and did a circuit of St Aiden’s nature reserve which turned out to be around 4 miles. Pace was very leisurely and we were chatting all the way around. Concluded with a coffee at the Rivers Meet cafe in Methley. Would recommend.
Saturday 13th May – 3 miles, 26:31 mins
Had a long day of work on Saturday but gathered enough energy at the end of it to go for a run. Didn’t push too hard but was just happy to get out of the house. 8min48sec average split.
Fri 12th May – 8x1min intervals
Today saw a return to interval training, and felt very positive. 8x1min intervals embedded into a 3 mile route. Felt strong for all intervals and able to maintain concentration throughout. I especially find alternating focus between putting effort into the legs and putting effort into the arms helps maintain focus throughout.
Thurs 11th May – 5 miles
Had a mini weigh-in yesterday and found that I had lost mass on my week off down to 81.8kg. This inspired me to continue to increase my mileage as I rehabilitate so moved up to 5 miles today. The weather was hot (set out at about midday) and the route included a significant hill so the going was tough but didn’t feel like too much of a slog. Ended up averaging around 8:30 min/miles. Felt drained for rest of day.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe- Impressions
As a day-one Switch adopter, Breath of the Wild kept me interested for about 70 hours and I loved playing the console handheld, on-the-go. I was disappointed with Zelda’s lack of end-game content, however, and left wishing I had something else to play on my shiny new console. Enter MK8D.
Everything about Mario Kart radiates quality, craft and fun. The game looks stunning, and is incredibly easy to pick up and play. I quickly set to work attempting to get gold on all of the Grand Prix, which up to the Mirror Cup was challenging but not overwhelming. 200cc mode was whole other beast, and many of the cups took several (many) attempts. All of it was thoroughly enjoyable.
In comparison to my previous experiences with Mario Kart games, MK8D feels fairer. It is still frustrating to be blue-shell’d, but knowing there are ways to avoid it mitigates this considerably. Items can be used to repel the blue shell, and letting an opponent cruise into first place only to get nuked from above is extremely satisfying. Similar goes for red shells and other obstacles in the game. Ultimately it feels more like a game of skill.
This has been evident through the online play as well, in which I have seen my ranking slowly improve as I gained skill and finesse. Again, nothing seems unfair and the consistency of the top players within a tournament indicates that the role of luck is minimal. Furthermore on the online play, the netcode seems good once in-game with little to no lag and generally good performance. I have been kicked from pre-game lobbies more than a few times though.
My main criticism of MK8D is that after around 15 hours I have gold in all the cups (unlocking the Gold Mario character) and feel unsure what else there is to do. More gold equipment can be unlocked by getting 3 stars in all the cups, which sounds like much more of an ordeal than it is worth. I still need to investigate Time Trial mode which could reveal some more addictive challenges, but (while fun) I don’t feel compelled to go back to the online mode. Hopefully MK8D has something to hook me back in lest I return to my wanderings in the Switch release schedule wasteland.
